I have some old recipes using Roman meal. Does anyone know what this is and/or if it is still available?
A friend has asked me to translate her late grandmother’s recipe book so she can make some of the recipes she remembers from her childhood. She is not an experienced cook and the recipes list just the ingredients with minimal (sometimes no) cooking directions. At least 20 of the cake recipes call for Roman meal. Apart from a company manufacturing health bars/cereals I can find no reference to Roman meal on Internet. I assume that it is some sort of flour or other grain product. It could be simply a brand name for a generic product. My friend lives in USA and I grew up in Australia so it may just be that Roman meal is a US brand name for a familiar product. I wrote to my friend but neither she nor her mother could tell me what Roman meal is/was. I am keen to help my friend with her recipes but at this stage I can’t do much with the recipes calling for Roman meal. I would be very grateful for any further information on this mystery ingredient.

Frannie answers:
Roman meal is whole wheat grains used for making breads and cereals

Betty asks…
What size cake pan makes 1/4 of a standard cake recipe?
I want to use my favorite standard cake batter recipes, but make 2 small two layer cakes, one for now, one to freeze for later. Would the 6″ cake pans be the correct size to do this? I know I can use just one layer, or cut the layers in half, but neither looks as pretty as a whole 2 layer cake, especially for small birthday gatherings.
Thank you all for the information – it was all useful, but Wilton.com had exact amounts of batter needed per pan, that was a very helpful suggestion!

Frannie answers:
6 in will work but you might have enough for 3 pans do not it will make enough for 4
you might go to wilton.com to check batter amount for the pan

Ruth asks…
Recipes for a dairy-free birthday cake?
Sally’s first birthday isn’t until late July, but I want to start gathering recipes for a dairy free birthday cake so I can taste test.
They don’t want to test her for allergies until she is at least one year. I know she’s allergic to dairy, but she could very well be allergic to other things. She was getting random breakouts of hives and swelling and it stemmed from me touching food (a piece of bread or something) and then touching her. She’s THAT sensitive. So we don’t allow her to have any processed foods or dairy. She has fruits, vegetables, fish and beans.
But it is really important to my fiance that she gets a little birthday cake to herself. I’m so afraid that she’ll be allergic to wheat or gluten or whatever because she reacts so extremely to ANY food touching her skin.
Are we just out of luck or are there any dairy free, gluten free, everything free cake recipes??

Frannie answers:
Check in specialty or fancy grocery stores near you. Many have cake mixes that are dairy free and gluten free. Whole Foods, Trader Joes and many “organic” stores will carry them.
Instead of a cake, could you just make a fruit sorbet for her to have? Mold it to look like a little cake?
Http://dairyfreecooking.about.com/od/cakes/Cakes.htm
http://mudspice.wordpress.com/2007/08/11/cupcake-recipe-gluten-free-egg-free-dairy-free-sugar-free/
Since the cake will be just for Sally, could you substitute breastmilk for any milk called for in regular recipes? Just a though.

Need Recipes For Jenny Cake
I once watched a travelling show where this guy went to a food joint (I think its in Jamaica or another Caribbean island) & order Jenny Cake. This cake was later stuffed with some meat & vegies (I think, can’t remember exactly).
So if anyone knows of its recipe, pls share it with me. Thanks you in advance.

Frannie answers:
This was all I could find
Jenny Lind cake
It is the basic1,2,3,4 cake found in most cookbooks or on the box of cake flour. Divide into three layers & to one add 1 cup of chopped raisins & 1/2 teaspoon of either apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice. It is a stack cake & add 2 ladles of brandied peaches in between the layers.
**If stuffing with meat & veggies – I would suggest using veggies & meat you like but use bisquik or corn muffin mix instead of a “cake” batter

Sharon asks…
Any doggie birthday cake recipes….?
Around two months ago we rescued a 10 month old border collie/blue heeler mix. His previous owner kept him in a crate for over 20 hours a day and then one day had an “epiphany” that he didn’t have the time to take care of him. He dropped him off at the pound where I picked him up a few days later.
When we first got him, he would sit on the porch all day and just stare at the floor. He was completely unresponsive. He had no muscle tone and could only walk about 50 feet before having to lay down again. He acted like a 15 year old dog who is ready to die and no one believed us that he wasn’t even a year old.
Well, after two months of very hard word and dedication and some divine intervention, Puck now enjoys daily 3 mile walks and can do tricks with accuracy that I have yet to experience with my other borders. We are lucky enough to know that today is his actual birthday and want to throw a little doggy bash in celebration.

Who knows an amazing cake recipe I could try?
I’m looking for an easy to make chocolate cake that I can eat later! Any recipes that are any good that you guys/girls know?

Frannie answers:
I found one only yesterday by Googling “Chocolate Cakes” and found one called “Death by chocolate” which I then went on to make, complete with the chocolate fudge icing recipe which was a bit down the page.
Apart from the usual flour, sugar and eggs, all you’ll need is a couple of spoonsful of lemon juice to sour some milk with, some cocoa powder (NOT drinking choc!) and some plain chocolate.
All I can say is WOW! – and for once, where the recipe said “…and bake for 1h 20mins” it was RIGHT – so many times I find a lovely recipe which says bake for 20-25 minutes or until well risen (etc) only to find that it REALLY takes over an hour!

Laura asks…
Does anyone know how to make a moist cake out of a box?
I don’t bake from scratch. I need an easy recipe that bakes moist cake from a box. Please help.

Frannie answers:
My husband and I have to watch what we eat. He has cholesterol issues and I have to cut back on sugar and salt. Anyway, I’ve just recently learned to tweak a box mix to make a wonderful cake: Any flavor mix(we will say yellow for the example). To your mixing bowl, add the mix, ONE egg, One and a fourth cup water, about 4oz. Applesauce(I use the little individual cups with cinnamon), about a teaspoon of cinnamon. Beat at med. Speed for two minutes. I then fold in a hand full of chocolate chips(made a spice cake yesterday and put in some raisins that I soaked in water)Be sure to flour your chips so they won’t sink to the bottom of the cake. Pour cake in to pan(I used a Bundt)If it’s a dark pan, cook at 325 for about 40 to 46 minutes(depending on your oven)Just follow the cooking instructions on the back of the box. This makes the most wonderful, soft cake.

Sandra asks…
Any recipes for extra moist carrot cake using box mix?
Time is a factor, so I don’t necessarily want a recipe from scratch. However, if adding sour cream or apple sauce or something else will make the box mix better, then I’m all for it. Extra moist, and extra easy (and of course, delicious) is what I”m looking for.
Thanks!

Frannie answers:
I add a can of drained, crushed pineepple to the boxed mix… Its moist, and very yummy!

Pour the batter into the pan.
Bake for thirty minutes or until it is done.
To make a natural carob frosting, mix six tablespoons of dry milk with four tablespoons of carob powder. Blend in four tablespoons of molasses. Blend in two teaspoons of butter, oil or fat. Add enough milk, gravy or broth to make the mixture creamy. Frost the dog cake when it is cool.

Recipes for a all grain free dog cake?
It is my dogs birthday today and I want to make her a cake but because of some minor health problems she has she can not eat anything that has grain in it, she only eats grain free dog food. Does anyone have any grain free dog cake recipes? There can’t be any rice oats or anything that is grain it has to be completly grain free. I use to make her a grain free cake that called for ground beef a can of wet dog food and then cream cheese for the icing but I can’t find that recipe anymore so I’m not sure how to make it anymore. If someone could give me some recipes that may match the old cake i use to make it would be greatly apreciated but if not any recipes that do not have grain in it will be fine.
Thanks in advance

Frannie answers:
Form a pound of ground beef into a cake layer shape (doing this in a pie pan or round cake pan is easiest). Do the same in another pan with ground chicken or turkey, pressing so that it will wind up in one big hamburger-like piece when baked. Bake at 350 until cooked through. Remove any excess grease with a turkey baster and discard. Refrigerate until firm. Soften a brick of cream cheese, about 20 seconds at a time in a microwave, until it’s easily spreadable. Spread a thin layer on one of the meat discs. Stack the other on top. Frost the whole outside with a thin layer of cream cheese and refrigerate until set. It’s rich, so only give a small piece at a time.
You can also do a third layer with canned salmon as well, if you would like. You’d just take a large can of salmon, drain and pat dry, and mix with some beaten egg and (since your dog has issues with grain), some mashed potatoes to help hold it together. Again, press into a layer cake pan, and bake until set in the center. This should be the center layer if you do it, as it can be a bit crumbly and make the top difficult to frost neatly with the cream cheese, and isn’t stable enough to be on the bottom.

My dogs birthday is tomorrow, so Im making a cake. Im using a dog cake recipe that also included a safe frosting mix, but I was wondering if it would be okay to use that gel frosting stuff to write her name on it!
Also, is food coloring safe to use for dogs?

Frannie answers:
Sugar is not a good thing for dogs, they can’t digest it very well. I wouln’t chance it. I would go to a high end pet store and see if they have something you could use for your puppy cake.

Recipe For Cakes For Dogs

Betty asks…
Is it bad to give your dog cake?
Is it bad to give your dog (vanilla) cake ? I know a recipe for Dog frosting but what about the cake? If it is bad please tell me a good dog recipe or where to find one.

Frannie answers:
It won’t hurt them if they got a little by accident, but giving them cake with sugar and fat from butter on purpose is not the best thing to do for them…there are lots of alternative healthy treats, you don’t need to give them human junk food.

Bacon Chicken Layer Cake
This recipe makes a real layer cake! Chicken, bacon and yogurt provide aromas that drive dogs crazy for this cake.
* 3 cups flour
* 1 T. Baking powder
* 1/2 cup margarine, softened
* 6 eggs, beaten
* 1/2 cup corn oil
* 2 jars strained chicken baby food
* 2 cups finely shredded carrots
* plain or vanilla yogurt
* 2 or 3 strips of bacon, fried crisp, then crumbled, or use bacon-flavored jerky strips, cut into bits.
Generously grease and flour two 8″ round cake pans; set aside. Combine flour and baking powder; set aside. In a mixing bowl, beat softened margarine until smooth. Add eggs and corn oil; mix well. Add strained chicken, and shredded carrots and mix until smooth. Add flour mixture and mix thoroughly. Pour batter into the 2 prepared 8″ cake pans. Bake at 325° for 60 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes before removing from pans. Cool completely on wire racks.
Place one layer on a serving plate and spread yogurt over top. Place second layer on top, then spread yogurt on top and sides of entire cake. Sprinkle crumbled bacon or bits of jerky strips over top. Use “Pupperoni” sticks for candles.

ive already found loads of websites with recipes,
so i just want suggestions from people with first hand experience

Frannie answers:
OK, First of all, If I were to make a cake for my dog it would be made out of kibble, no sugar or frosting or cake mix at all, because it would make the dog really sick or give it worms. Second of all, i think its nice and cute that you are making or thinking about a cake for your dog,but personally I think you should ask a vet if its safe for a dog to have a cake- Just to be on the safe side.

Sandra asks…
Does anyone know a recipe for a dog edible birthday cake or anything like that?
My baby girl german shepherd is turning one and I would like to give her something she can eat and not get sick!!!!
P.S. I know it is weird but……..

Frannie answers:
Here are a couple of different dog birthday cake recipes. For “frosting” most used blended cottage cheese or plain yogurt. I blend peanut butter with cottage cheese to make a peanut butter “frosting” and use carrots and carob for sprinkles. One lady who is in my dog’s “play group”, makes something she calls “pup” cakes. So it is perfectly normal to want to give your dog a special treat for its birthday.

Ruth asks…
How to make a moist, tender yellow layer cake from scratch.?
Hello,
I’m interested in baking cakes from scratch, but I have a fear of over beating the ingredients. Can someone give me a recipe for a good moist yellow cake WHICH INCLUDES the beating times for ALL the ingredients as I add them? I have a KitchenAid Epicurian 475 watt mixer that I’d like to use, but I’m afraid I’ll over beat and have a tough cake. Can anyone help? If so, thanks in advance and have a great day!
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I’d like to use my new Wilton 10 inch round pans. Thanks

Frannie answers:
INGREDIENTS
1 cup butter
2 1/2 cups white sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups buttermilk
3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
2 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9×13 inch pans. Sift together the flour, baking powder and baking soda. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk, mixing just until incorporated. Pour batter into prepared pans.
Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool. I’m sure you could divide the into your pans and use the left over batter to make cupcakes. Buttercream frosting is really good with this cake. The buttermilk in this recipe makes the cake super moist.

Lisa asks…
Can I make cake icing from scratch without confectioners sugar?
Tonight I decided to make a cake from scratch, but for the icing we don’t have the right kind of sugar or a mixer. Does anyone know any good recipes for Icing with regular sugar? Quickly please, the cake is already In the oven. (the store is closed)
we don’t have any mixers, we sold them when we moved. I have only my hands and utencils

Frannie answers:
Copied and pasted from an answer I gave last month for old-fashioned boiled icing, lol.
Boiled Icing (a very good recipe — it will stay soft for several days)
Put 2 c. Sugar (white or brown) in a pot and add 1 c. Water. Meanwhile, beat 2 egg whites ’til stiff and set aside. Bring the sugar mixture to a boil, then simmer over a medium heat; cook until it reaches the soft ball stage (when you put a drop of the syrup in a cup of cold water it forms a ball, but it collapses if you try to pick it up). Remove from heat. *Slowly* add the hot syrup to the egg whites, beating with an electric mixer or whisk as you do so. Beat until fluffy. Add vanilla (not absolutely essential if you don’t have any on hand).
Boiled icing made with brown sugar is my favourite topping for a chocolate cake.
Edit: Oops! Just noticed the part about not having a mixer. Honestly, though, it’s been years since I’ve owned a set of electric beaters. I use a hand whisk for egg whites all the time.
2nd edit: okay… Well then, let’s narrow this down. What kind of cake is it (flavour, layer vs. Tube pan)? Knowing this would make it easier to suggest alternative toppings.
Since I’m off to bed, I throw out these possibilities:
-use whipped cream instead (don’t need a mixer — put it in a chilled glass jar and shake vigourously)
-place layers together using jam (any flavour works well with a white cake, while apricot or cherry jam goes well with chocolate). You can also use lemon curd or lemon pie filling.
-make a butterscotch sauce from brown sugar, butter and cream/milk (recipes abound on line) and drizzle over the top of the cake
-a citrus glaze can be made by heating orange juice and adding sugar then brushing on top of cake
-dark chocolate and cream — equal portions cooked gently together in a double boiler, then poured over the cake.

Frannie answers:
Mrs. Roberts’ Pound Cake
1/2 cup Butter
1 cup Milk
1/2 cup Crisco
6 Eggs
3 cups Sugar
3 cups Cake Flour
1 tsp. Vanilla Butter-Nut Flavoring
Cream butter, Crisco and sugar thoroughly. Add eggs (one at a time) as you continue to beat. Sift flour several times. Add milk and flavoring alternately with flour. Beat just enough to mix thoroughly (too much beating makes cake tough). Grease and flour tube pan. Shake out excess flour. Start cake in a cold oven. Cook at 300 degrees for 1 hour. Raise temperature to 350 degrees and cook until cake is brown. Let cake cool at least 15 minutes before removing from pan. Cool on rack.
Brooke’s Pound Cake (she’s 12 years old)
1 lb Butter
6 Eggs
3 cups Sugar
4 cups Self-rising Flour
1 tbs. Vanilla
3/4 cup Milk
Combine all ingredients and beat until well blended, about 10 minutes. Cook at 350 degrees until brown.

Recipes For Cake Balls

How to make an easy 3d volleyball cake?
My friend is making a volleyball cake for her team. We want it to be a 3d ball that looks like and actual ball. She wants to be able to put her team mates names on there and have it look as real as possible. Frannie answers:
Marshmallow Fondant Recipe Ingredients
* 8-ounce bag of marshmallows
* 2 pounds of powdered sugar (also called confectioner’s sugar or icing sugar; you won’t quite use all of it for this recipe)
* 2 tablespoons of water
* vegetable shortening (Crisco) for greasing hands and tools
How To Make Marshmallow Fondant Put the marshmallows and water in a microwave-safe bowl and heat on high for about two minutes. The marshmallows should be puffy but will still hold their shape. Stir thoroughly until smooth.
Next, add about 1 1/2 pounds of the powdered sugar and stir with a spoon well greased with the Crisco. The homemade fondant at this point should be a very sticky dough.
Thoroughly grease your hands and work surface with the shortening and knead the fondant, adding a little bit of powdered sugar at a time until the mixture isn’t sticky anymore. If it’s sticky, add more sugar. If it’s dry and tearing, add a teaspoon or two of water and knead it in. The homemade fondant recipe is finished when the dough is pliable and stretchy without tearing.
If you won’t be using the marshmallow fondant recipe right away, cover it with a little bit more Crisco and wrap it well with plastic wrap. Seal it in a bag and keep it in the refrigerator, where it will last for several weeks.
Ingredients
* 1/2 cup shortening
* 1/2 cup butter, softened
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
* 2 tablespoons milk
Directions
1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, shortening, and vanilla. Blend in the sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the milk, and continue mixing until light and fluffy. Keep icing covered until ready to decorate
And just buy a cake mix from the store..making the cake from scratch will take more time
Hope This Helps =D

I am looking for a recipe for a Bon Bons.?
These are chocolate covered balls of cake. Very smooth. They are not Tiramisu as they do not contain any liquors or cheese I think. They have a very rich, strong Devil’s Food flavor and I think judging from the flavor they have coffee in them. And they are dipped in chocolate. Very pretty. We were served some at a catered dinner and I would love to have the recipe. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks so much.

Chocolate Peanut Bonbons
PREPARATION:
In large bowl, combine peanut butter, pecans, powdered sugar, dates, and butter and mix well; form into 1″ balls.
Melt semisweet chips and 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips together in a glass measuring cup in microwave on medium power about 2 minutes, stirring once, until melted and smooth.
Stir in remaining 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips and stir constantly until smooth (this tempers the chocolate, setting up crystals so it will harden). Dip each ball into melted chocolate mixture and set on parchment paper. Let stand until chocolate is firm, then store tightly covered at room temperature.

Betty asks…
What would be a good dessert that I could bake for Christmas?
I always bake my friends/teachers at school something for Christmas. I have always made puppy chow in the past, but it’s getting old. (Puppychow is not actual dog food, it is rice chex covered in peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar.) This year I would like to try one of these 3 recipes.
I will post 3 pictures of each different thing. I won’t post the recipe, but I will say what it is made of.
#1 Cake Balls http://angiescake.com/tag/christmas-cake-balls/
#2 Pretzels in Almond Bark http://thecooksnextdoor.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/img_91111.jpg
#3 Christmas Fudge http://farm1.static.flickr.com/65/178035695_f82a9d1782_o.jpg
The Cake Balls are just chocolate cake formed in balls and dipped in either milk chocolate or white chocolate
The Almond Bark pretzels are just pretzels dipped in almond bark and decorated
The Fudge looks gross but it tastes soo good. The colored things in the fudge were marshmallows.
I will put whatever I make in cute little plastic christmas bags and they are going to mostley teenagers and a few adults. So what do you think they would like? or which one would be most appealing?
Thanks!

Frannie answers:
I always make peppermint bark. It is really easy to make and looks really festive.
You just melt two pounds of white chocolate, and mix in crushed candy canes into the chocolate once its melted. Then you pour the chocolate onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and put it into the fridge until the chocolate hardens. When its hard you take it out and break it into pieces like you would for peanut brittle.

Frannie answers:
I vote for the Pretzels in Almond Bark. Have you ever seen a teen who didn’t like pretzels? They will be awfully pretty, in your bags and tied up with a bow.
Also, they will probably be the best “keepers” in case someone wants to save them for Christmas day. They can be eaten a few at a time, bag closed and the rest eaten later.

Recipe For Cake Pops

Donna asks…
Anybdy have the recipe for a simple no-mix cake?
I think it’s called a dump-it cake. No nastiness please, this is something that uses canned fruit and is designed for people who don’t know how to cook, or are just learning.
All I can rembmer is that you open up a bunch of cans and then “dump” it into the cake pan, then “dump” some flour on top and pop it into the oven. You’re not supposed to need to stir it. Thanks!
But how much butter is a “cube”? Butter in my area comes in rectangular sticks, with one stick being 8 Tablespoons and four sticks equalling a pound.

Frannie answers:
1 can crushed pineapple
1 can wilderness pie filling
1 box white or yellow cake mix
1 cube butter
1 cup water
Grease bottom of pan. Add cake, Mix in water, pineapple and pie filling. Slice butter on top and bake at 350 for about 35 minutes.
Do not drain the pineapple

Need a help for my mom?
So… I want to tell my mom how I really love her… I am doing this Powerpoint and I let my mom watch it… And I really like to cook something and this recipe popped on my head that recipe is a Graham Cake. Can someone give me the recipe and how to make it? I saw my mom make it in Christmas but I fell asleep when I’m watching her. And if you could, Is there something I could do to my mom? Thanks! Her birthday is September 6 so I’m hurying up

You can get the recipe via google, here is one

As for me, a PowerPoint slideshow is a good idea. Make a delicate digital photo album and fill it with photographs of your mother with you. To make this unique gift even more personalized, choose a beautiful template, add a few words underneath each picture about your memories, insert a moving background song….

2 cups chopped walnuts
1 tub prepared vanilla frosting
1 tub prepared chocolate frosting
Orange food coloring (or mix red and
yellow)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt together butter, chocolate chips and
unsweetened chocolate in top of double boiler until smooth. Set aside
and allow to cool to room temperature.
In large bowl, whisk together eggs, espresso powder, vanilla and sugar. Stir in cooled chocolate mixture; combine well. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Mix until combined. Fold in chocolate chips and walnuts. Pour into buttered 15-by-10-inch baking pan.
Bake 30 minutes in preheated oven. Let cool completely in pan on rack. Cover and chill overnight.
In large bowl, whip vanilla frosting until light and fluffy, using
electric mixer. Use food coloring to dye frosting deep orange color.
Using favorite cookie cutters such as pumpkins, cats or leaves, cut
shapes out of chilled brownies, carefully loosening from pan with
spatula. Decorate brownies with frosting. Makes about 1 dozen.

Mandy asks…
Recipe For Coffee Mug Cake?
You mix together cake mix(or brownie mix, can’t remember), some kind of liquid, maybe an egg, in a coffee mug then microwave it. I can’t remember the proportions or cooking time. It makes a real gooey cake you have to eat with a spoon. I know they make things like this that you just pop in the micro but this will make about 16 servinngs per box — so much cheaper. Does anyone have this recipe? Thanks.

Frannie answers:
Tbls = tablespoon
4 tbls cake flour
4 tbls sugar
2 tbls cocoa
1 egg
3 tbls milk
3 tbls oil
1 large mug
add dry ingredients to mug and mix well
crack an egg and add it to the mug, make sure you mix it well to avoid any pockets of flour in the corners
pour in the milk and oil and mix well
pop your mug into the microwave and zap on max power for 3mins
wait until the cake stops rising and settles in the mug
enjoy with a cup of coffee

Lizzie asks…
how to fix a botched pineapple upside down cake?
i just started to make a pineapple upside down cake. i read the box followed directions and poured the batter into pan and popped it in the oven as directed. however that recipe was for pineapple cake. not pineapple upside down cake which i did not see those directions til to late. it was on the side of the box. how can i make a pineapple topping to put on the cooled cake i just baked. i want that brown sugary pineapple topping that you get with an upside down cake.

Frannie answers:
The pineapple topping for pineapple upside down cake is usually carmelized sugar and pineapple. Here’s an idea:
Melt 1/2 cube butter in saute pan. Add 1 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup chopped pecans. Add cubed pineapple (not fresh). Cook on medium low heat until syrupy and thick. Add a little vanilla.
Poke holes in the top of your cake and spoon topping over the top. Serve with ice cream.
Good luck!

Fairy Cake Recipe Without Eggs

Maria asks…
How can I measure ingredients for baking without scales? Please help daughters birthday emergency!?
Hi, it is my daughters birthday and she wants fairy cakes which would be very simple if we wernt living in Portugal on my husbands work contract and have no scales!!
I normally use 125g of flour, butter & caster sugar & 2 eggs (plus a bit of milk)
Can anyone please either help me convert that, or give me a different recipe please. I am from the UK so if you are a kind US reply I have no idea what a cup is???
Thank you so much!

Frannie answers:
Well, I am US and I do try to always be kind – so here is my answer:
One pound of flour is roughly 3 1/2 cups and one pound equals 455 grams. So 455 divided by 3 1/2 = 130 grams per cup. Roughly.
Here is more:
All-purpose Flour and Confectioners’ Sugar
U.S. Cups Grams
1/8 cup 15 grams
1/4 cup 30 grams
1/3 cup 40 grams
3/8 cup 45 grams
1/2 cup 60 grams
5/8 cup 70 grams
2/3 cup 75 grams
3/4 cup 85 grams
7/8 cup 100 grams
1 cup 110 grams
